I recently came across a copy of the official U.S. Forest Service topographical state map of Oregon, which is gridded off into square sections, each uniquely identifying a small area of land around 100 acres in size. A warm feeling of astonishment swept over me when I saw that for the last three months, completely without knowing it, I have been living precisely within grid square number 27. I knew there was something here other than me.
