Navigating Stuckness is a personal essay about feeling creatively stuck, commissioned by Jay Allison as a “Transom Manifesto.”

Transom is a workshop and showcase for public radio — past manifestos have been written by people like Ira Glass and Jad Abumrad.

In the essay, I write about my life as a series of chapters, each one beginning with the fresh-faced idealism of a new approach to living, and each one ending with a period of stuckness and a moment of crisis. I try to pull out insights and lessons from each chapter that might be useful to others.

The chapters — paint, data, documentary, autobiography, tools, and two others — are illustrated with acrylic ink drawings, ranging from realistic to surreal.
